The Galveston County Health District (GCHD) has issued a public health alert due to an alarming increase in Vibrio bacteria infections. This potentially deadly bacteria is found in warm coastal waters, and officials are urging beachgoers to take precautions to avoid exposure.

What is Vibrio Bacteria?

Vibrio bacteria is a type of bacteria that can cause a range of illnesses, including gastroenteritis, wound infections, and even flesh-eating diseases. It is commonly found in warm, brackish waters, such as those found in the Gulf of Mexico and along the Texas Gulf Coast.

Symptoms of Vibrio Infection

Symptoms of Vibrio infection can vary depending on the type of infection. Gastroenteritis, caused by ingesting contaminated seafood or water, can lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Wound infections, caused by contact with contaminated water, can cause symptoms such as redness, swelling, pain, and discharge. Flesh-eating diseases, though less common, can be extremely serious and lead to amputation or even death.
